Call for Applications: Bachelor of Science in Nursing & Midwifery (Upgrading)

Kamuzu College of Nursing has the approval of the University of Malawi Senate and that of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi to offer a three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery (BScNM) upgrading program targeting Nursing and Midwifery Technicians. This development is in response to the needs expressed by the Ministry of Health and Population, who is the main employer of nurses and midwives in Malawi; from the Nursing and Midwifery Technicians and from all other key stakeholders. Findings from needs assessment and recommendations from consultative meetings informed the development of this three year BScNM upgrading programme. The programme intends to produce a multi-skilled and competent registered nurse/midwife, who will be equipped with the following skills: managerial, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. These skills will enable the graduate to competently provide quality and comprehensive preventive, curative and rehabilitative nursing care to individuals, families and communities at all levels. The programme will further prepare the graduate with interpersonal and entrepreneurial skills. The programme will be offered in three years and the candidates will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery.
Admission Requirements
Candidates should have a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with 6 credits including credits in English, Physical Science/General Science, Mathematics and Biology and the following diplomas for them to be admitted as follows:
  1. Candidates with a University Diploma in Nursing/Nursing and Midwifery/Mental Health-Psychiatry Nursing/Community Health Nursing shall join at year 4 of the programme and graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery.
  2. Candidates with a College Diploma in Nursing/Nursing and Midwifery from a recognised institution shall join the programme at year three after successfully completing a one-year bridging programme and shall graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery.

Additional Requirements for entry into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery (Upgrading) programme

    • Academic transcripts
    • Copies of certified academic certificates
    • Copies of current professional registration certificates (from Nurses & Midwives council or Medical Council).
    • Detailed Curriculum Vitae
    • Reference letters (two academic and one professional indicating at least two years of relevant working experience)
    • A non-refundable application fee of MK11, 000.00 for Malawians and US $25.00 for non – Malawians and this should be deposited to Unima Revenue Account number 1002239236, National Bank, Zomba Branch. Swift Code NBMAMWMW Sort/ Branch Code 006. Attach a deposit slip to your application as proof of payment for the application fees.
    • Proof of scholarship i.e. support letter from the sponsor.

Any application form that will not include the above mentioned documents will not be processed!

Fees for the Programme
All successful Malawian candidates shall be expected to pay tuition fees of MK 950,000.00 (Nine Hundred and Fifty Thousand Malawi Kwacha) per academic year for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery (Upgrading) Programme. All successful international candidates from the SADC region shall be expected to pay tuition fees of USD5,621.00 per academic year while those from non SADC countries shall pay tuition fees of USD 12, 198.17 per academic year. All other fees such as medical fees, accommodation e.t.c. shall be advised by the College from time to time depending on mutual agreements and availability.
