The University of Malawi (UNIMA) Council met on May 27, 2020 and approved the names of candidates who have been admitted into the University to pursue various programmes for the 2020/2021 academic year. All candidates have been selected on non–residential basis.The University selected candidates based on merit, by gender, physical challenges as provided by the Disability Act. In this regard candidates competed by their respective gender and overall aggregate from the best aggregate points to the lowest cut off point. Each programme had its own requirement as stipulated in its criteria for selection, as advertised by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) for generic students or UNIMA for mature entry candidates. The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), through its Technical Working Group coordinated the harmonisation of selection to avoid multiple selection of candidates. Each university however conducted its own selection pursuant to their own Acts. The NCHE received a total of 13,259 applications for selection consideration by all public universities in 2020/2021.Out of the 13,259 applicants the University of Malawi alone selected a total of 3633 candidates comprising 1,656 females (46%) and 1,977 males (54%) of its intake. There are 39 international candidates included in this intake comprising 22 females and 17 males. About 19 applications were received under special needs. These underwent medical examinations at College of Medicine and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. Please note that 13 candidates passed the test and have been selected into the University. All successful candidates shall find and pay for their own accommodation and meals. Tuition fees loan is currently handled by the Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) where those interested will have to submit their application. Generic candidates who would like to stay on campus should apply for accommodation through the Registrar of their respective Colleges. Where accommodation is granted the student shall pay rentals per month for the accommodation to the College. Accommodation is limited as such, each college has a strict criteria that is used which among other needs it prioritises candidates with special needs. Candidates selected to Kamuzu College of Nursing will be informed individually whether they will report at Lilongwe or Blantyre campus.An offer letter will be issued to each selected candidate where the candidate is expected to indicate their acceptance. Candidates who are not ready to take up their places, should inform their College in writing within 21 days from the date Council released the results. Candidate who wish to reserve their place should put it in writing to the registrar. Reservations of a place only lasts for one year.MATURE ENTRY PROGRAMMESThere are 350 candidates selected into various programmes in UNIMA comprising 221 males (63%) and 129 females (37%) of the mature intake.
